Scalable Real-Time Game Backend

High-throughput Node.js architecture supporting hundreds of concurrent connections

Engineered load-balanced multi-server game backend infrastructure using PomeloJS, sustaining high-concurrency player sessions and thousands of database operations per minute.

1. Context & The Core Problem

Real-time multiplayer applications generate intense bursts of state synchronization and high-frequency database read/write queries during peak player activity.

The Bottleneck:The inherited backend utilized PomeloJS—an older framework with scarce modern documentation and architectural bottlenecks under increasing concurrent connection loads.

2. Engineering Solution & Implementation

Deeply analyzed framework internals, decoupled session state, and introduced load-balancing and distributed server processes to scale horizontal throughput safely.

Direct Contributions & Ownership

  • Investigated and resolved memory leaks and connection bottlenecks within legacy PomeloJS socket handlers.
  • Implemented horizontal process clustering and load balancing to distribute player traffic evenly across server nodes.
  • Optimized database queries and write buffers to withstand thousands of reads/writes per minute during peak matches.

4. Outcomes & Verified Impact

Sustained hundreds of concurrent connected players with low-latency event synchronization.

Evidence level: user-reported

Handled thousands of database reads and writes per minute without request timeouts or session drops.

5. Key Challenges & Architectural Lessons

Engineering Challenges

  • •Navigating undocumented framework quirks and deprecated dependencies without breaking active live features.
